Factors contributing to this growth include increasing awareness of sexual intervention and the importance of early intervention, the dedication of service providers and their willingness to train others, and the availability of more descriptive literature on the treatment of this age group. In addition, there has been a growing recognition of the need for assessment and evaluation, interagency cooperation, networking, and statewide treatment planning. There also has been an increase in community-based services using a variety of approaches, including peer and group therapy, individual and family counseling, and behavior modification. Preliminary program evaluations suggest that such programs can produce low recidivism rates. A need still exists for more comprehensive training and for more specialized and segregated residential treatment facilities for this population. 11 references.
