This British manual describes the most productive current techniques for detecting and enhancing fingerprints and provides guidelines for selecting and applying the process most likely to be effective in revealing prints on the particular surface being examined.
Abstract
Background material covers laboratory procedure, the interference between fingerprint and forensic examinations, latent fingerprints, handling and packaging exhibits, and photography. Charts identify the process selection for various surfaces. Surfaces covered in the charts are smooth nonporous; rough nonporous; paper and cardboard; plastics; soft vinyl, rubber, and leather; adhesive coated surfaces; metal; raw wood; wax and waxed surfaces; fabric; and fingerprints in blood. Detailed instructions are provided for the following recommended processes: amido black, fluorescence examination, gentian violet, iodine, ninhydrip, physical developer, powders, radioactive sulphur dioxide, silver nitrate, small particle reagent, sudan black, superglue, vacuum mental deposition, and visual examination.
