Abstract
The scope, eligibility requirements, application procedures, type of compensation or aid, and enforcement are covered for each of 16 possible remedies. A crime/remedy table shows applicable remedies, depending on whether the offender is traced/untraced or convicted, for each of nine offenses. These include assault, theft, robbery, criminal damage, riot, fraud, unlawful eviction, motor accident injury, and motor accident damage. Remedies include the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, the Motor Insurers' Bureau, others' insurance, victim's own insurance, compensation orders, restitution orders, criminal bankruptcy orders, the Police (Property) Act, injunctions to freeze bank account, the Riot Damages Act, civil action, and welfare benefits. An introductory chapter briefly explains each remedy and describes the procedures the victim is likely to face during police investigation and in court. A final chapter suggests reforms in current compensation and aid schemes. Appendixes provide guideline monetary figures for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and compensation orders. 3 tables and index.
