This introductory note performs three tasks: (1) It develops a typology of jury research by dividing the research according to whether it focuses on dependent variables-factors representing various aspects of jury and juror behavior or on the independent variables that potentially explain that behavior; (2) it locates the other articles in this special issue within the typology; and (3) it assesses the literature on the impact of jury size and unamimity requirements.
Abstract
The note concludes by suggesting that despite a significant amount of previous work by researchers, a number of important questions concerning the American jury cannot at present be reliably answered. (Publisher abstract)
