Specific procedures for orientation, guided self-evaluation, and goal-setting in the individualized education plan (IEP) process can result in better informed and motivated students and more effective special education programs for juvenile offenders.
Abstract
At the Louisiana Training Institute-Monroe, a pre-IEP conference interview provides the juvenile offender with an opportunity for orientation, self-assessment, and active decisionmaking. During the pre-IEP conference interview, the juveniles review their ability levels, needs, and interests in terms of the instructional resource materials and facility programs available to them. Each youth is an active member of the treatment team. Currently, 25 percent of the Institute's special education population is enrolled in driver's education and 15.9 percent is enrolled in high school vocational classes. The IEP planning process provides a means of increasing the motivational level of these students, enabling them to progress toward qualifying for vocational classes, while increasing their self-esteem in the process. 20 references.
