Section 1 presents descriptions of four major types of programs: community-oriented programs, youth-oriented programs, programs targeted at other special groups, and programs targeted at specific problems or employing limited or unique means. The first type includes programs emphasizing police-community liaison, Neighborhood Watch, public information and education, volunteer and paraprofessional participation, and team policing strategies. The second type includes youth law education programs, block parent programs, youth awareness campaigns, youth camps and clubs, and child safety and identification programs. Special crime prevention and youth participation programs have targeted senior citizens, Hispanics and blacks, low-income and high-risk groups, and victims. Programs aimed at specific problems have included beach patrols, landlord-tenant dispute settlement, residential burglary reduction, crime stoppers, and citizen and police reward programs. Section 2 provides a State-by-State listing of police departments identified as having community policing programs. Information on the numbers of officers in the department and in the program, type of program, and telephone numbers also is provided. A copy of the survey instrument used to obtain program information is appended.
