The text identifies both human and natural security hazards and examines ways to assess the criticality of facilities or areas and their vulnerability to damage. Subsequent chapters address four physical lines of defense which must be established to protect a facility: (1) a perimeter barrier; (2) the area between the perimeter barrier and the building which can be protected through patrols, lighting, organization of outside storage areas, and employee parking lots; (3) the building's peripheral walls; and (4) areas inside the building as defined through criticality and vulnerability assessments. Specific topics considered include lighting systems, doors and windows, warehouse and dock areas, and identification and control of both personnel and vehicles. Also discussed are fire protection and prevention, emergency evacuation, and disaster plans. Installation-specific chapters cover high-rise buildings, computers, retail stores, construction sites, crowd control and special events, and colleges and universities.
