This commentary on recent criminal justice publications emphasizes the potential role of privatization in dealing with correctional problems. One study, an analysis of Virginia's prison costs and correctional staffing levels is given particular attention.
Abstract
The 400-page study of the Virginia correctional system concluded that the low ratios of inmates to staff and relatively high costs per inmate result from the relatively large number of institutions with lower populations than found in other States. However, the study appears not to have considered the possibility of privatization, which is the theme of 'NIJ Reports' and a prime topic of a new NCJRS corrections data base. These reports indicate that Virginia and other States should experiment with privatization. Additional sources of criminal justice research, such as the General Accounting Office and the Rand Corporation, are also described. Titles and bibliographic information are given for several publications.
