This codebook explains the data set and coding information for data concerning criminal justice employment and expenditures for all the States, counties, certain municipal governments, and Puerto Rico between 1971 and 1979.
Abstract
Data came from annual surveys taken by the U.S. Bureau of the Census from all States and counties; municipalities having a 1970 population of 10,000 or more; and a sample of cities and municipalities under 10,000 in population. Figures are presented for police protection, the judicial system, legal services, prosecution, public defense, corrections, and other criminal justice services. The data file includes records for approximately 50 States; 3,030 counties; 7,466 cities; and 2,783 townships. Data are available in two formats: a card image file and an OSIRIS dataset.
