This manual describes the study content and methodology of the 1973 juvenile detention and correctional facility census, along with the study's variable description list and codebook.
Abstract
The census covered residential facilities operated by State and local governments as juvenile detention and correctional facilities at the time the census was conducted (November 1973), a month prior to the primary census reference date (June 30, 1973), and with a resident population of at least 50 percent juveniles. Data cover type of facility, government level that administers the facility, number of admissions by type and sex, and number of discharges by type and sex. Other data address quarterly resident population by detention status and sex, number of residents adjudicated delinquent or declared in need of supervision by offense type and sex, facility capacity, residents' ages, average stay, number of staff, and expenditures. Also described are the census coverage, data collection procedures, archiving history, the archive file description, processing information, and codebook information. Appended term definitions, data problems and errors, counties by name, questionnaire, Osiris Type 3 dictionary description, and confidence interval information.
