From a Christian perspective of redemptive healing, this book examines and illustrates the causes and impact of incest and the process of recovery.
Abstract
Sexual abuse is discussed as having its roots in blind obedience to parents, self-gratification, and denigrating attitudes toward women and children. The devastating impact of incest on the victim, the offender, the family, other apects of everyday life, and society as a whole are examined and illustrated in a case study. The needs of the victim then are considered in terms of the victim's feelings of denial, betrayal, anger, shame, and guilt. Emphasis is placed on the importance of overcoming denial, focusing on God, reparenting, and supportive relationships in the healing process. Four needs of the offender are identified: ending the activity, being given forgiveness, involvement in normal life activities, and rebuilding the family. Emphasis is on the power of forgiveness and redemptive healing. The role of friends, government and voluntary agencies, social workers and therapists, and the church in the healing process also is discussed. Finally, the importance of trusting in a loving God as a source of hope and healing in incest is considered, and a prayer for healing is provided. Exercises to hasten understanding and effect healing follow each chapter. 1 figure.
