This report provides comprehensive statistics on the pay, fringe benefits, education, and training of adult and juvenile staff in State correctional systems, as well as data on institutional populations, jurisdictions under court order, and the death penalty.
Abstract
Tables initially give budgets and staff size of adult and juvenile correctional systems for each State, identify the corrections department's position in State governments, and list providers of adult and juvenile probation/parole/aftercare services. The American Correctional Association's Membership Status Report provides the basis for a profile of its membership and statistics on salaries for all levels of corrections personnel from chief administrative officer to clerk. Other tables compare salaries by geographic region and offer data on fringe benefits such as health insurance and retirement. In the area of officers' training and education, the report addresses starting salaries, education required at the entry level, and length of training periods in individual States. The report concludes with statistics on adult inmate populations, juveniles under supervision, clients on probation/parole/aftercare, institutions under court order, a racial profile of wardens and superintendents, and a State death sentence survey that covers numbers of prisoners sentenced to death and execution methods. Maps, charts, and graphs.
