Abstract
'Terrorism' is defined as the use or threat of repeated violence to induce fear of similar attack in numerous nonimmediate victims so as to make those so threatened comply with the terrorists' threats. The goals and motives of terrorism and profiles of terrorists are described. Studies comparing the characteristics of leftist and rightist terrorists are summarized. An examination of terrorist training considers the supporters, locations, content, and quality of the training. Financial supporters of terrorism are identified, followed by analyses of the strategies and targets of terrorism. Regarding terrorists' targets and techniques, particular attention is given to attacks on aircraft and air terminals, threats to communications systems, hostagetaking and sieges, and terrorist technology and weaponry. Counterterrorist measures are highlighted, with emphasis on executive protection under the threat of a vehicular kidnapping, the antiterrorist arsenal, and protective measures for the individual. Appended listings of potential terrorist targets and selected terrorist groups, as well as guidelines for mail-bomb recognition, 85-item bibliography, and subject index.
