How families raise children and the emotional environment of the home have great impact on determining the number of youth in trouble with society. Consequently, the Oregon Social Learning Center in Eugene, Oreg., focuses on teaching the parents of aggressive children better parenting skills.
Abstract
The parents, in turn, try to better discipline and supervise their children and help them overcome their behavior problems. The program tailors teaching to suit the particular needs of each family. The program has proven twice as effective as conventional treatments and works best with antisocial and conduct-disordered children. A variety of other intervention and family therapy approaches are described, including PRYDE in Pittsburgh, Pa. This program serves children in foster placement and their families. A separate motivational system is adapted to each child's particular needs. Each child has a set of goals. If the child achieves a goal for that day, he or she receives a set of privileges that are personally potent.
