These lesson plans provide a curriculum that aims to prevent child abuse and other forms of domestic violence by teaching young men basic parenting skills and providing them with information on child care and child development.
Abstract
The 10-week course consists of two 50-minute sessions each week. The sessions include short lectures, case stories with discussion questions, games and exercises, and demonstrations. The curriculum focuses on interactions with children under age 6. It emphasizes the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors involved in family violence, based on both research and the experience of family violence programs. It takes a firm stand against corporal punishment, based on the view that leaders should confront negative values to create the opportunity for change. Substance abuse and its relationship to violence are also discussed. Other course topics include baby care, how to deal with anger, discipline, communication, listening, encouragement, infant and child development, and family activities. Instructions for each lesson include the materials needed, suggested scripts for lectures, and other guidelines for group leaders.
