Parts 1 and 2 discuss empowerment of gays/lesbians and examine myths and misconceptions about violence and the nature of anti-gay violence. Patterns and perpetrators of violence in dating and pick-up situations, sexual assault, domestic violence, and police abuse also are profiled. Part 3 outlines basic personal safety and self-defense techniques for both verbal harassment and potential physical assault. Three additional sections examine the aftermath of victimization, including the psychological effects of victimization; seeking medical, compensatory, and emotional help; and the victim-criminal justice system relationship in the areas of reporting, civil and criminal remedies, and victim rights and responsibilities. A special section on police abuse considers the homosexual as victim, witness, and arrestee; outlines procedures for filing a complaint; and discusses entrapment. The final section describes some community efforts to organize against violence and to assist victims. These include antiviolence projects, police-community cooperative efforts, criminal justice system monitoring programs, and educational programs for service providers and the general public. 3 resources listed.
