This paper provides statistics regarding juveniles on death row as of May 20, 1986 for crimes committed while under age 18, along with profiles of individual offenders.
Abstract
Of the 1,714 persons imprisoned on the death rows of 33 States, 31 are on the death rows of 15 States for crimes committed while under age 18. This total is the lowest of any time in recent history and stems largely from the reluctance of judges and juries to impose capital sentences on juveniles. Several juveniles sentenced to death many years ago, however, have almost exhausted their appeals and face execution in the near future. The report discusses juveniles who have been executed in recent years and trends in the juvenile population on death row. Of the 31 death row inmates discussed, 30 are male and 1 female, 14 are white and 17 are black. Profiles of the 31 offenders describe their age at the time of the crime, race and sex, offense, and sentencing history.
