These 13 papers examine research, policy, and treatment issues and approaches for dealing with the problem of drunk drivers.
Abstract
Authors include academicians, criminal justice personnel, and health care providers. The characteristics of male and female drunk drivers and differences between first, second, and multiple offenders are examined. Other analyses consider the needs of female drunk drivers, the involvement of the family and friends of offenders in treatment, and the prevention of drunk driving in black people and in adolescents. A judge argues for sentencing reform based on the finding that most first-time offenders are serious alcohol abusers or alcoholics rather than social drinkers. The uses of cognitive-behavioral therapy and other innovative treatment approaches are also explored. Sentencing reform, a new inpatient treatment program, and other treatment approaches in Massachusetts are outlined. Data tables and chapter reference lists.
