Since their inception in 1983, the task forces have initiated 1,578 cases; returned indictments in 1,128 cases involving 11,832 individuals; seized cash and property assets of more than $495,000,000; and obtained forfeitures totaling $151,000,000. In addition, the task forces used State and local investigators in about 60 percent of their prosecutions. Three undergirding principles have contributed to this success. These include: teamwork, facilitated by cohousing; strong, consistent leadership; and financial and manpower resources adequate to the task. With regard to the last, drug-related funding under the Reagan administration has grown by over 238 percent and personnel work years attributed to drug enforcement have more than doubled.
