Brief summaries of 21 institutes and 4 forums convened at New York State's 1985 conference on probation and correctional alternatives cover a variety of issues related to probation and alternatives to incarceration in New York State.
Abstract
Following the text of a major criminal justice address by Governor Cuomo, proceedings of the institutes are summarized. Topics covered include the management of family violence, local planning for incarceration alternatives, probation and parole innovations, recent legislation pertinent to the future of institutional and community corrections, and a community corrections response to drunk driving. Other institute issues were cultural differences between officers and supervised offenders, handicapped offenders, liability issues in community corrections, diversion for persons in need of supervision, intensive supervision, and supervision clusters. Forum topics encompass public perceptions of probation and parole, the impact of the new juvenile procedure code on probation practice, probation pretrial services standards, and problems in administering restitution programs. Conference resolutions pertain to family violence, alcohol abuse, community service, and the role of women and minorities in future conferences.
