This manual presents the coding instructions, code sheets, and descriptive summary of a study of the frequency of narcotic use by a sample of male narcotic addicts in Baltimore, Md., and the relation of substance abuse to various types of criminal activity.
Abstract
The universe was a population of known narcotic offenders arrested by the Baltimore Police Department between 1952 and 1976. The sample consisted of 354 male addicts selected from a population of 6,149 known narcotic offenders arrested by the police. The variables were designed for an analysis of narcotic addicts as crime risks, patterns of nonnarcotic drug use, and the percentage of illegal income addicts obtained during the period of addiction compared with nonaddiction periods. Information encompasses types of narcotic drug use, crime patterns, and the use of marijuana, cocaine, barbiturates, amphetamines, and Librium. Coding instructions and code sheets pertain to crime days by periods, nonnarcotic drug use by periods, and illegal income.
