This manual presents the codebooks and a descriptive summary of a study that tested the deterrent effects of the number and severity of sanctions for 6,127 persons from three birth cohorts (1942, 1949, and 1955) in Racine, Wis.
Abstract
Of the 4,079 who had continuous residence in Racine, the 2,601 who had contacts with the police between 1942 and 1977 were the target population. Data collected in Racine, Wis., pertained to the effectiveness of judicial intervention and varying degrees of sanction severity. The police contact data set contains 96 variables equivalent for all three cohorts. The variables include characteristics of the person who had the police contact and those specific to a particular police contact. Other variables include number of police contacts; seriousness of the contacts; sanction severity; and age, cohort, and decade in which the contact occurred. The interview data set contains 52 variables, and these data are combined with the police contact data to produce 158 variables in the interview data set. The interview and contacts codebooks are provided.
