Papers presented at the 15th Community Epidemiology Work Group meeting focus on drug abuse trends and patterns in 18 major U.S. metropolitan areas, particularly from June 1983 through December 1983, with attention to use patterns of particular drugs, juvenile drug abuse, adverse drug effects, and drug abuse prevention.
Abstract
Two papers on drug effects discuss the adverse health effects of pentazocine and tripelennamine abuse (substitutes for heroin) as well as cocaine. Papers on heroin use patterns encompass the incidence of heroin use from 1965 through 1981, heroin prevalence versus frequency of use, heroin-related deaths in Baltimore, Md., and the incidence of opiates and other psychodrugs and user profiles among young conscripts for 1982. Other papers on general trends in drug abuse provide overviews of the illicit drug situation through September 1983 and changes in the global market structure for illicitly cultivated drugs over the past 20 years. Other papers address juvenile drug abuse and the drug abuse prevention program of New Orleans, La. Tabular data, references, and bibliographies accompany papers. For volume 2, see NCJ 104640.
