This study presents worldwide terrorist statistics and traces international terrorism for the year 1984 in terms of lethality, state affiliation, support, and victimization.
Abstract
The most lethal acts of terrorism in 1984 occurred in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Findings of terrorist activity in 1984 reveal the Middle East as the principle instigator of international terrorism. The most active states were Iran, Syria, and Libya, all of which targeted their attacks primarily against Western Europe, the United States, France, and Israel. Terrorism is found to be supported by Iran, Syria, Libya, South Yemen, and indirectly by the Soviet Union. Data reveal a rise in 1984 for terrorism that occured outside the Middle East, primarily in Western Europe, and was executed by Middle Eastern terrorist groups. In both Latin America and Asia, terrorism of indigenous origin far exceed international terrorist attacks and is expected to continue. Appended chronology of significant terrorist events in 1984.
