The 12 papers in this collection address theoretical, control, and treatment aspects of child abuse, spouse abuse, school crime, juvenile delinquency, rape, violent crime, terrorism, and other manifestations of violent behavior.
Abstract
The first two papers survey empirical research and treatment options in two areas of family violence, child abuse and spouse abuse. One essay examines school violence from an ecological perspective, addressing its causes, multifaceted solutions, and the need for a broad community approach to reduce student alienation and isolation. Juvenile delinquency theories are reviewed and model interventions described in another presentation. Another paper defines rape from various perspectives including the courts, the victim, and society and reviews empirical research. Prevention suggestions focus on changing the societal belief that sexual aggression against women is legitimate. Two presentations on the psychology of aggression focus on possible hormonal antecedents of overt aggression and behavior modification approaches to prevention and control. Other papers survey three issues: moral education, the purported effects of media violence on behavior, and terrorism. A final chapter highlights areas that future research should address, such as prediction and the need for a multifaceted approach to all aspects of violence reduction. References, tables and index.
