Eight articles on police management and law enforcement activities focus on training, strategic planning, evaluation of individuals and staff units, and three broad issues in law enforcement.
Abstract
One article explains Operation Bootstrap, a program now operating in several States in which private corporations provide tuition-free places for police personnel in their corporate training programs. Another paper describes use of the strategic planning techniques similar to those long used in the private sector by the Palo Alto (California) Police Department. Two articles explain the Chicago Police Department's model for conducting mandatory psychological evaluations to determine fitness for duty and recommend revised managerial techniques to decrease the alienation commonly felt by older, veteran police officers who do patrol work. An article on evaluation explains a three-pronged system of feedback and quality control for evaluating administrative units in a policy agency. A discussion of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984 focuses on its benefits to enforcement efforts directed at removing armed career criminals from society. An article on the stun gun concludes that appropriate training in its use could make it an extremely effective weapon in defusing volatile situations and reducing charges of police brutality. A discussion of real estate loan fraud recommends the use of new investigative approaches by law enforcement personnel. Notes.
