The Women's Health Unit of the Massachusetts Department of public health developed and coordinated an interdisciplinary, multicultural team of health educators to conduct a pilot series of staff and resident workshops that focused on reproductive health, family planning, sexuality, nutrition, and sexual and physical abuse. The project, which was initiated in July 1985, conducted workshops at Cameron House, a secure detention center, and Rotenberg School, a secure treatment program. The staff training was designed to present an overview of girls' health concerns. Training for the girls, which began 1 week after the staff training, focused on the health topics of concern to the girls. The staff and girls' response to the project was positive with respect to content, the team approach, and the teaching style (interactive). The report recommends that the Department of Youth Services implement the project in all girls' facilities. Attached outlines for each workshop and data on residents.
