Testimony from terrorism experts from the U.S. Defense Department, the State Department, and the Institute for Studies in International Terrorism examines the nature and extent of Libya's direct involvement in international terrorism.
Abstract
Issues examined include the terrorist groups and factions supported by Libya, the manner in which it supports them, the instruction and training facilities it provides terrorists, and the support Libya receives for terrorist activities from other states. The hearing is intended to be a case study of the interrelationship of international terrorist activities, the coordination of the terrorist movement among a number of radical states, and the Soviet Union's role as the ultimate sponsor of a large proportion of terrorist acts against the United States and its allies. Regarding counterterrorism policy, the hearing aims at identifying any impediments which may thwart the United States in developing a coordinated antiterrorist policy with its allies. Achievements in U.S. efforts to organize to combat terrorism are reviewed, including the formation and work of the Vice President's task force on terrorism. Prepared statements and responses to written questions are provided.
