The alternative education program coordinated by the Snyder-Union County Juvenile Probation Department (Pennsylvania) provides tutorial instruction to secondary school students who have been referred through the juvenile court for minor delinquency and/or truancy.
Abstract
Alternative education classes are located on the campuses of two local universities where undergraduate students serve as tutors. Six school districts have been receiving services from the program since 1981. Originally funded by grants from the Pennsylvania Juvenile Court Judges' Commission and the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the program is now self-sufficient through per diems paid by the school districts. A unique aspect of the program is the close relationship between the juvenile court and the universities, from which each derives benefits. The school districts have also benefited in that they now have a viable option for chronic truants, disruptive students, and potential dropouts. A reduction in local dropout rates suggests that the program has had an impact on this problem. In 1982, the program received the Outstanding Education Program Award from the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. (Author abstract)
