The Child Advocacy Center provides a central location for the handling of all child sexual abuse cases. The child victim's first contact with the center is with a member of the interview team which is composed of protective services and law enforcement personnel. Specially trained professionals conduct interviews in rooms designed to appeal to children of different ages. The interviews usually are conducted in several sessions, and aids such as dolls and art materials are available. Once the interview is completed, a case review process is undertaken to determine further action. Alternatives may include changes in custody, active law enforcement involvement, prosecution, ongoing review, and diversion. An evaluation plan also has been developed to assess the program's benefits to children and their families. This coordinated approach has enabled participants to improve their professional skills and has improved the criminal justice system's response to victims of child sexual abuse. A training videotape also has been developed to aid other communities in implementing this approach.
