Proceedings of a 1986 conference on criminal careers and career criminals focus on the validity and appropriate use of predictive information in criminal justice discretion and decisionmaking.
Abstract
Also considered were individual characteristics with predictive content, the distinction between predictors of criminal behavior that are useful to practitioners and those that are not, and methodological and operational issues in the explicit use of predictive information in criminal justice decisionmaking in such areas as law enforcement targeting of offenders, prosecution of recidivists, pretrial release, probation and parole, and supervision. Other discussion focused on practitioners' experiences in programs with a career criminal orientation and the uses of risk assessment in such programs. Also examined were the treatment of drug-using offender, co-offenders, juvenile to adult criminal careers, and the treatment of serious juvenile offenders. Finally, the uses of career criminal and criminal career knowledge in crime control and crime prevention programs were delineated. A conference program and list of attendees are appended.
