Testimony on narcotics abuse and control along the Southwest border (San Diego) is presented by representatives of appropriate Federal, State, and county agencies and private citizens.
Abstract
Testimony is presented by the California attorney general, representatives of State agencies addressing the drug problem, representatives of various Federal agencies addressing the drug trafficking problem in the San Diego area, and the mother of a juvenile drug abuser. Witnesses agree that the supply of herion, cocaine, and marijuana coming across the Mexican border into California is at record levels, in spite of State and Federal cooperative efforts to reduce the supply. State and local law enforcement officials report on their efforts, and representatives of various Federal agencies (U.S. Customs Service, Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Defense Department, and the Coast Guard) testify on their drug enforcement activities. State-Federal cooperation in drug law enforcement is indicated to be generally satisfactory. Witnesses emphasize the importance of attacking both drug supply and drug demand. Various drug abuse prevention programs in the region are described.
