This book describes the role of psychology and psychologists in dealing with the operational and managerial concerns within the police organization.
Abstract
The role of psychology in police work is discussed with a focus on the importance of communication, dispute management, and conflict resolutions skills in the field and the psychologist's role in training these skills. The utility of psychological profiling in the investigation of multiple murder and sex crimes also is discussed and illustrated in two cases. The importance of psychological debriefing for police experiencing posttraumatic stress symptoms associated with shooting and violence also is described. The benefits of employee assistance programs for law enforcement personnel and agencies are delineated, and services offered by such programs are discussed. The psychologist's role in the selection, training, assignment, and career development of police officers also is considered. Finally, a program is described that provided special training to facilitate the better adjustment and increased retention of female police recruits. Chapter references and index.
