Six papers from the 1985 International Symposium on the Computer and the Law, held in Jerusalem, Israel, focus on the protection of privacy of data in computer systems, copyright in software and data, the roles of carriers and publishers in electronic publishing, international data flow, computer crime, and computer legislation in Israel and the United States.
Abstract
The opening paper provides a technical overview of the problem of protecting computerized data and suggests some steps for developing cost-effective systems that provide adequate protection for computerized data. Another paper pertaining to the protection of computerized data reviews how copyright law protects computer software and data in Israel. A transcribed panel discussion considers computerized data protection issues. A discussion of the role of carrier and publisher in electronic publishing notes that it is difficult to regulate or legislate in an environment of rapidly changing technology. A paper on the computerization of society considers the nature of the information industry, computer law, and computerization's threat to privacy. Remaining papers review a proposal for computer legislation in Israel being developed by the Ministry of Justice and provide an overview of computer crime legislation in the United States.
