While a disproportionate number of prison inmates are mentally retarded, most prison systems offer their retarded inmates no specialized facilities or programs.
Abstract
This lack of rehabilitative services, coupled with the retarded inmates' inability to adjust well to prison and their 'non-parolability,' cause mentally retarded offenders to serve a higher percentage of their original sentences than nonretarded offenders. Despite an increased call for segregated placement and specialized services for mentally retarded offenders, this concern is just beginning to be realized. (Author abstract)
