This eight-module curriculum provides an overview of family violence and victim assistance for law enforcement personnel.
Abstract
Curriculum materials cover social, psychological, and organizational factors in family violence; review crisis theory as it relates to dynamics of the violence and victim coping strategies; and describe goals and techniques for crisis intervention in family disputes. Also covered are criminal and civil law, remedies applicable to family violence cases, and victim assistance legislation. Identification of community resources for victims is described, as are referral criteria and procedures. Finally, departmental policies (especially discretion, and arrest versus nonarrest policies) and officer safety issues in responding to family violence calls are considered. Each module contains a lesson plan worksheet outlining performance objectives and major topics covered. Methods for presentation, resource materials, and bibliographies also are provided.
