Individual modules examine the nature and effects of physical abuse and neglect, the dynamics of the abusing family as it relates to developmental crisis theory, and the various forms of abuse and neglect (including emotional). Crisis intervention and interviewing techniques appropriate to child victims are delineated, and guidelines for investigation and arrest are provided. Statutory provisions relating to child physical abuse and the role of officers in civil and criminal litigation also are covered. An overview of the child welfare system as it relates to such cases is provided. Finally, medical issues, including physical examination and forensic issues, relevant to child physical abuse are reviewed. Each module provides a lesson plan worksheet outlining performance objectives and topics covered. Methods of presentation, resource materials, and bibliographies also are provided.
