This manual -- designed for field training officers (FTO's), supervisors, and command personnel who evaluate recruit field training performance in the Berkeley Police Department (California) -- details the structure and procedures of the department's field training and evaluation program.
Abstract
Section 1 focuses on program organization; orientation; and the duties and responsibilities of the FTO, field training sergeant, and field training lieutenant. Section 2 describes recruit evaluation procedures and provides evaluation forms. This includes procedures for daily and weekly recruit evaluations, the format for a final evaluation, an FTO log, standardized evaluation guidelines, and scale value application. Section 3 contains an outline of the field training to be accomplished in each of the program's 10 weeks. It includes a checklist that monitors the recruit's progress in being exposed to various tasks. Section 4 instructs FTO's in teaching techniques, lesson planning, and the effective use of visual aids.
