Abstract
Forms of wife assault and facts and myths about it are reviewed. Social conditions that encourage violence against women and contribute to women remaining in violent relationships are outlined, including sex-role stereotypes, economic factors, and the shortage of resources. The psychological experience of the victim is described, and the typical offender is profiled. Goals of and techniques for crisis, short-term, and long-term intervention with assaulted women are presented together with tips for counselors and advocates. Goals of counseling the assaultive man and major treatment issues also are considered. The impact of wife assault on children is described, together with its implications for counseling and advocacy. Finally, group treatment models for victim, offenders, and children are provided. Chapters provide suggested readings. Appendixes contain supplemental materials on the historical context of wife abuse, legal issues, resources, and the advocate's role. Figures and chapter footnotes.
