Both initial contact and investigation are covered. Custody and disposition of delinquent children is examined; guidelines for handling drugged, injured, intoxicated, or mentally disordered juveniles are provided. A section on dependent children deals with child abuse and neglect, truants, runaways, and ungovernable children. Child pornography, prostitution, and sexual exploitation is considered. One section, on juvenile suicide, discusses communication techniques, crisis intervention, and factors in and recognition of suicidal behaviors. Finally, techniques for interviewing juvenile offenders, child victims, and parents are presented. An appendix includes frequently used telephone numbers. Index and 3 references.
