Abstract
The importance of a 'we' orientation in which the trainer and trainee operate as a team is discussed. The role of training in facilitating learning in the areas of skills, knowledge, attitudes, and habits is examined. The process of learning is described; the trainer's role in providing input, guiding thought processes, affecting actions, and providing feedback is delineated. Deductive and inductive learning are distinguished. Learning by doing is considered, and circumstances under which the trainer might wish to exercise discretionary control over the trainee are described. Finally, guidelines for providing criticism and evaluating reasons for a trainee's performance failure are provided.
