This report examines the causes and incidence of hate activities and violence directed against homosexuals and lesbians in the U.S.
Abstract
In general, there has been a rising incidence of violence directed against gays and other group (Jews, Asians, Hispanics). Attacks against gays are influenced by irrational fear, hatred, and the perception that gays are easy targets who will not fight back or report violence to police. Violence against gays increased in 1986, and evidence suggests that fear of acquired immune deficiency syndrome has contributed to the problem. Widespread discrimination against gays also has contributed to their vulnerability to crime and violence. Informal data and victimization surveys of gay populations in Alaska and Connecticut indicate that hate activities and violence against gays is increasing and is pervasive in rural, suburban, and urban areas. Incidents have ranged from verbal harassment and threats through homicide. Data from four studies and a listing of gay victimization literature are appended. 2 footnotes.
