The Orleans Parish jail currently houses 3,500 municipal, State, and Federal inmates in three main facilities and satellite facilities consisting of two transformed former firehouses, a motel, and an office building. Inmate murals decorate the exteriors of many of the jail facilities. Inmates are involved in community work that includes preparation for and cleaning up after Mardi Gras and assistance for community groups. 'About Face' is a regimented discipline program for young, nonviolent inmates. The 50-inmate platoon is supervised by drill instructors who conduct military-style drills and ceremonies, inspection, and exercise programs. Members participate in various work programs. The sheriff's office processes State victim reparation awards and also sponsors therapy for victims at no cost to the victims. A jail automated records system encompasses booking operations, inmate records, inmate visitation, inmate accounts, commissary operations, and a psychiatric medical records system.
