International drug trafficking is a commercial enterprise rivaling in size and exceeding in profits the legitimate business conducted by a majority of the world's nations. The drugs-for-money transaction, once a part of the ongoing activities of a community or nation, seriously affects all societal elements -- political, economic, legal and criminal justice, geographic, industrial, agricultural, demographic, and sociopsychological. In some cases, the effects are direct; in others indirect. Once an area has become involved in drug trafficking, major control factors change. The various systems become interdependent with those of the trafficker. In such a situation, preventing corruption and reinserting stability become difficult if not impossible.
