This report summarizes findings from Virginia's 1987 survey of members of the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training to determine their States' experience with police job task analyses and the revalidation of such analyses.
Abstract
The survey was conducted as part of Virginia's revalidation of its 1982 police job task analysis, which was the basis for the development of a performance-based training program. The revalidation will determine if there have been any changes in police tasks that warrant training revisions. Of 47 States responding to the questionnaire, 30 reported the completion of job task analyses, with four others expected to be completed in 1987. Six States reported having revalidated their initial job task analyses, and two more are in progress. Of the 30 existing job task analyses, 25 have been used to develop performance-based objectives and testing, and 4 others are in progress. No State reported a legal challenge in the methodology used in their job task analyses or revalidations. Most of the States which have conducted revalidations reported that validated tasks remained the same as in the initial analysis. The questionnaire inquired about the methodology of revalidations and whether or not results were computerized. Data are also reported from a telephone survey of those agencies that have completed a revalidation. 2 tables.
