Ohio's mandatory safety belt law is discussed, and the public information and education campaign and enforcement efforts of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are described. The importance of police attitudes toward and personal use of safety belts for public compliance and enforcement also is discussed. A technique for halting haphazard speeders using the VASCAR Plus control unit mounted on a police motorcycle is described. The model used by the Arizona Highway patrol for determining staffing needs and patrol coverage is presented, together with the statistical data that must be considered. The operations of a specially trained vehicle theft interdiction unit in Arizona is outlined. A computer-aided accident analysis system is described that permits efficient deployment of Ohio troopers to problem traffic accident sites. Results of two studies into the characteristics of police pursuits (time, environment, offenders) are provided. Finally, highway call box technology and program management are discussed.
