This pamphlet provides an indepth guide to tire failure in traffic accident investigation.
Abstract
It discusses tire manufacture and construction, how a tire works, and basic examination and photography techniques. It describes the potential contribution to accidents of penetrations and punctures; impacts; fatigue and casing breakup; adhesion defects; and defects in valves, wheels, flaps, and rim bands. Inner tube and recap/retread manufacturing methods and problems also are covered. Nondestructive examination and sectioning and sampling techniques are described, as are problems specific to motorcycles, automobiles, trucks, and aircraft. Appendixes provide additional information in tire markings and tire indices and maximum loads. A chart of tire components and terminology also is included. Index.
