The community patrol officer (CPO) embodies the law enforcement activities of the traditional foot officer; the outreach and community organizational activities of the community relations officers; and the problem analysis, strategy development, and tactical specification activities of the police planner. This review of CPOP examined each CPOP unit's operating statistics, interviews with command and supervisory personnel, team meetings with the CPO's in each of the precincts, and interviews with the district manager of each community planning board. All of the CPOP units are operating in accordance with program design, and initial program goals are being met. Problems are modest compared to those encountered in the institutionalization of other programs, and all of the problems can be addressed in the next program year. Appendixes present 1985 monthly activity by precinct, unit program activities, sample letters of support, and relevant police department publications.
