This document describes the victim assistance program implemented by the Tarrant County, Texas Criminal District Attorney's Office in 1984 and provides the 1985 legislation that mandates services for crime victims.
Abstract
Within 24-48 hours after a felony case is filed in the district attorney's intake section, the victim assistance program sends an initial contact letter to the injured party. Items included in the letter are an informational brochure, a victim impact statement, and property restitution form if appropriate. The victim assistance program contacts victims again after a grand jury indictment. Services provided to victims during trial include an orientation to the criminal justice system, a special waiting room, and child care. Upon request, the program will help victims with problems, such as the return of property, intervention with employers, referrals to other social service agencies, and compensation applications. Legislation governing victim services addresses victims' rights, responsibilities of the district attorney/victim assistance coordinator, and responsibilities of the court, the Probation Department, and the Board of Pardons and Paroles. A chart illustrates the procedural flow of the victim impact statement. Forms used in the program are provided.
