The Child Safety Partnership held public hearings in 7 cities across the Nation, hearing testimony from more than 150 witnesses. The testimony revealed a shocking level of daily victimization of children throughout the Nation. Types of victimization include the physical abuse and neglect of young children, sexual abuse by relatives, abductions by strangers and noncustodial parents, alcohol and drug abuse among children, juvenile criminal victimizations, and unsupervised 'street' children in urban areas. Recommendations are offered for the private sector's (business, private nonprofit groups, and the media) involvement in the reduction of child victimization. Recommendations for community-wide action cover intervention, prevention, and awareness. Recommendations for parents and concerned citizens focus on individual actions that address child victimization. Federal, State, and local governments are advised on laws, policies, and procedures that can increase children's safety. Appendixes list the witnesses; information sources; organizations that support parents, children, and coordinate volunteer services; and a 100-item bibliography.
